Force-field analysis lets you visualize the factors that will drive and hinder progress toward your goal. Laying out these factors will let you develop a strategy that takes advantage of facilitating factors and mitigates risks posed by inhibiting factors. Follow the steps below to use this template.
- Make a list of the forces that will drive progress toward your goal, including forces that are internal and ones that are external to your organization or team.
- Rate each force that will drive progress on a scale of 1 to 5 (1=weak; 5=strong).
- Array those driving forces in the left column of the diagram, with the strongest forces written at the top and the weakest written at the bottom. Add more force arrows as necessary.
- List the forces that will obstruct progress toward your goal, including forces that are internal and ones that are external to your organization or team.
- Rate each force that will obstruct progress on a scale of 1 to 5 (1=weak; 5=strong).
- Array those opposing forces in the right column of the diagram, with the strongest forces written at the top and the weakest written at the bottom. Add more force arrows as necessary.
